New Beginnings This Spring

new beginnings this spring at Crystal Hills Organics

Forgive the cliché, but every year when the snow melts and the Earth shows us little hints of green, I cannot help but look forward to new beginnings, new life, and a fresh start. For the purposes of this blog, we will say that for us, from a beauty perspective, a fresh start means sloughing off the old, sad, dull winter complexion and revealing fresh, firm, rosy skin from head to toe. I plan to invigorate every inch of my delicious body with products from the Crystal Hills Organics line. Additionally, I am going to experiment with natural beauty recipes for the face and body and share these recipes and the results with my readers. I am hopeful that you will have some fun with…

Comfrey Hand Lotion

Comfrey Hand Lotion

Comfrey Hand Lotion You would think that by the month of March, there would be a bit more moisture in the air, just a little bit more to make our skin a bit more supple, a bit more elastic, a touch more comfortable.  However, I have noticed that right now in particular, my delicate skin is especially dry, itchy and uncomfortable.  At this time of year, I am constantly applying moisturizer to my skin, especially my hands, and it is a challenge to take away the itch brought on by what is left of the dry Canadian winter air. I am opting to incorporate comfrey into this natural beauty recipe, perhaps because in a subliminal way, comfrey sounds a bit like “comfortable,” which my skin…

Love Spell Potion

Create your own Love Spell Potion

Love Spell What fun would it be as an herbalist if I couldn’t research all the magical properties of botanicals and plants? To me, botanicals and crystals are like treasures – little gifts from God to help us along the way. They can help lift up our vibration to that of pure love when we need a little boost or help us set our intention so we can create the reality we want. To create this Love Spell, we will be using botanicals and a carrier oil, as well as rose quartz and essential oils if you so choose.   Botanicals in our Love Spell: Use a ½ teaspoon of each botanical and any amount of the vanilla that comes out of the pod (the…

DIY Cinnamon Lip Scrub

DIY Cinnamon Lip Scrub

Valentine’s Day always makes me hopeful. Whether I was in a relationship or not, I always felt that this was a day to be cherished and to show our friends and loved ones how much we cherish them. Of course, if you were lucky enough to be in love on Valentine’s Day, then naturally this is a day made for kissing. Kissing costs nothing and is super fun. A good kiss can turn an ordinary day into something better. Whether it is a quick kiss, a long, deep kiss, or a full out make out session, kissing is the best. I come out of a good kiss with rosy cheeks, happy lips and a mood to match. This is why having lips that are ready…

Avocado Hair Mask

hair mask

Now that winter is upon us, the cold and wind make my eyes water and my skin hurt. I have noticed that my hair is getting dry and frizzy, as there is more static electricity in the air. Now is the perfect time to figure out some soothing and moisturizing beauty treatments. An avocado hair mask is a great place to start. You will need: 1 ripe avocado, mashed 2 eggs 1 tbsp honey 1 tbsp olive oil Combine all ingredients in a bowl, apply to hair from roots to tips, and massage vigorously into the scalp. Leave the mask to set for 20 minutes, then rinse clean . Follow by a light shampoo and rinse to remove any remaining oil. The avocado will provide…

Nectarine Blush

Nectarine Blush Facial Mask

We all know that the vitamins and antioxidants present in fruits do wonders for the inside of our body, and when applied topically, their nutrients can help our skin glow on the outside too. The “Nectarine Blush” is one of my favourite DIY skin masks for summer.  You will need: ¾ cup plain yogurt 1 ripe nectarine 1 tbsp honey Splash of rosé wine   Blend or purée all ingredients together and apply to face, neck and décolleté. Leave the mask to penetrate for 10 minutes, then rinse off.    Yogurt contains lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid that works to dissolve dead skin cells. Applying a yogurt mask to your skin will gently exfoliate and help to bring out your natural glow, as…

Wine Ice Cube Facial

Wine Ice Cubes

Our summers in North America are lovely and warm, and it can feel so good to cool off by rubbing an ice cube across your face and neck. The cooling sensation is instant and intense, and the feeling gives your skin an instant tightening and radiant effect. Now imagine adding an antioxidant benefit to this regimen. This summer, try making wine ice cubes to rub on your face and neck. You can use red, white or rosé. The effect and beauty benefits are most concentrated with red wine, but it is important to use what you like best. All wines, and most specifically organic red wines, contain antioxidants such as flavonoid, resveratrol, and tannins that deliver skin renewing benefits. These ingredients help to fight free radicals…

Bianca’s “Ethereal” Fragrance

Bianca’s “Ethereal” Fragrance  My friend Bianca is a concert pianist. She is lovely and magical, extremely delicate and light; her beauty and talent seeming almost too perfect for this world. In a word, she is ethereal. The last time that I saw her, she kissed me hello on the cheek and I caught a whiff of the loveliest fragrance. It was light and pretty, and it smelled like spring. Bianca makes her own fragrances, using essential oils, and she gave me the recipe.  For this fragrance, you will need the following essential oils: Myrrh Thyme linalool Rosemary Laurel Lemon myrtle Lemon.  Additionally, you will need a carrier oil, such as light avocado oil, light olive oil, grape seed oil, or sweet almond oil. For every 10 drops of carrier…

Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub

Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub

Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub   I love taking a time out for myself and getting a pedicure, with the lovely soaking, the massaging, the scrubbing. However, the busy life of a working mom often gets in the way of such indulgences. When I have some free time, I can recreate the feeling at home by making a DIY sugar scrub that does wonders for invigorating my tired legs and feet.   For this scrub, you will need: ½ cup white granulated sugar ¼ cup coconut oil 1 tsp grapeseed oil Grated lemon zest Lemon essential oil   In a microwave safe bowl, gently melt the coconut oil. Combine it with the sugar, and add the grapeseed oil. Blend in the lemon zest, and add 5-10 drops of lemon essential…

Honey and Olive Oil Conditioning Treatment

Silky Hair DIY Treatment

Honey and Olive Oil Conditioning Treatment  The dry winter weather can suck the life out of anybody’s hair. Every couple of weeks, I like to apply a nourishing, moisturizing deep conditioning treatment. For me, it makes a difference. This one is easy and effective.  For this hair treatment, you will need: ½ cup organic liquid honey ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil  ½ teaspoon of vanilla (if you want an aromatic boost)  Whisk the ingredients together until blended, apply to dry hair, wrap your hair in a towel or a shower cap, and let it soak in for 10-15 minutes. After that, shampoo and condition as usual. You will likely need to do two shampoos.  The honey in this treatment acts as a natural humectant, providing soothing moisture and…
