Shelf stable vegan milk may contain stabilizers like carrageenan, guar gum, and xanthan gum. Carrageenan is used as an emulsifier and thickener to improve the taste that can be found in yogurts, dips, cottage cheese, vegan milk, ice cream and other processed foods.

It is important to know that carrageenan has been linked to inflammation of the gut causing digestive issues over time and is not recommended for those who have IBS, Crohn’s disease or any digestive related problems. Most vegan milks have removed carrageenan from their ingredients list including Silk, Almond Breeze and Coconut/Almond Dream. Vegan milks can also contain sugars, and some have up to 16 grams! It’s best to source unsweetened varieties or simply create your own.


Creamy Hemp Milk


Yields 7 cups

1 1/4 cup hemp seeds
6 cups filtered water

Optional add ins:
2 tablespoons raw cacao powder
2 tablespoons real maple syrup (or more to taste)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon real vanilla extract

1. In a high powered blender, add hemp seeds and filtered water.
2. Blend until smooth and frothy.
3. Optional: Add raw cacao powder, maple syrup, cinnamon, and/or vanilla.
