What are essential oils?
Essential oils are highly concentrated, volatile, aromatic essences of the plants they are derived from. Think of it as the essence of the plant’s fragrance. Essential oils are generally extracted by steam distillation, but can also be extracted in other ways such as expression, cold pressing, resin tapping, and solvent extraction. I prefer to stay away from essential oils that have been solvent extracted and lean towards organic oils or ones derived from other methods.
How are essential oils used in beauty routines?
Essential oils can be incorporated in many ways for your beauty routine by applying topically – diluted of course. They can be used for cleaning, brightening, toning, and healing the skin. They can also be diffused for inhalation if someone is feeling anxious or stressed as we want to relax those facial muscles by feeling calm, versus frowning and creating the dreaded “11” on our foreheads.
What are some of the benefits and draw backs of using essential oils?
There is a myriad of benefits for incorporating pure essential oils into your routine. Essential oils can affect your entire well-being, offering a healing effect for you mentally, physically, and emotionally.
Pure essential oils are definitely pricier, with organic essential oils being most expensive. Additionally, some people can have allergies to certain essential oils just as you would to a plant.
